Traveling to Gulu Town in Uganda by Road
Gulu Town is located in Northern Uganda, approximately 6 hours drive from Kampala city, the capital of Uganda. Gulu District and northern Uganda in general is a former rebel infested area, that could not easily be accessed in the past. However all this changed since 2006, when the government of Uganda, through the Uganda People's Defence forces wiped out these rebels from Northern Uganda.
Today traveling to Gulu by road is as smooth as a walk in the park. The bus transportation network is very efficient, save for a few accidents brought about by human error. Traveling by private means in your own car , you can be sure to arrive safe to your destination in Gulu. The journey from Kampala to Gulu is majorly on smooth paved road till the Karuma falls. The section between the Karuma falls and Gulu Town has lots of potholes and ensure to reduce your speed at this point, atleast to 60km/hour.
To ensure your drive to Gulu is not a boring affair, drive your own car or ensure to rent a car in Kampala if you can afford. This way you can take your time and enjoy some of the attractions enroute, and look out for the following;
The pineapple market is Luwero is a good place to buy some fresh fruits mostly pineapples to eat along and also carry some to your destination. As you go further north a stop over at the highly cafeteria in Migyera is worthwhile you can enjoy a cup of coffee to keep you alert. Those who know the Nakasongola area and its length will testify that you can easily sleep off on the steering wheel and that's a recipe for disastor.
Drive on and as you approach towards Kafu, you will see a signpost of the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, located just 2km off Gulu Highway. For those who wish to see the White Rhinos at close range this is the perfect opportunity, there are always specially discounted rates for Ugandans.
Our last major attraction along this journey will be the thunderous Karuma falls and Baboons along the bridge. Free opportunity to watch wildlife free of charge and the falls. Ensure not to take pictures out of your car as its not allowed for security reasons.
With these few tips i suppose your next trip to Gulu will be awesome.
